Sitepal provides you with a canned avatar character for your site which speaks a recorded message, alledgedly to "enrich the user experience and increase sales". Ok, so assuming that

the visitor is wearing headphones or has speakers turned on
doesn't find it cheesy
isn't put off by a cartoon character
it has something worthwhile saying, beside "Hi and thanks for visiting", just like the pointless sales assistant standing at the door meeting and greeting [I've never understood that as its clearly so false but maybe that's because of my English reserve!]

then I'm still don't see this being a direct lead into more sales. If you need to have an audio announcement to draw someone's attention to something on the site, why not simply put whatever it is in a more prominent position!

Feel free to educate me on this point.
